'Adored' Boy with Autism Worked Hard to Speak Fluently. Then He Was Killed in Front of Grandfather's House

A 9-year-old boy was shot and killed in Compton, Calif.

A 9-year-old boy was shot and killed in front of his grandfather's home over the weekend, his family has said.

The shooting was reported on Saturday, Nov. 30, just after 7:30 p.m., per NBC4 Los Angeles, KABC and KTLA. It occurred on Haskins Avenue in Compton, Calif., NBC4 Los Angeles reported, citing the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).

No arrests have been announced and the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear. The LASD didn't immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

The victim's family identified the young boy as Princeton Nicholas Jones, per a GoFundMe page set up to help pay for his funeral.

"Born in 2015, Princeton was a truly special young man with a brilliant mind and a warm heart. Diagnosed with mild autism at the age of 2, Princeton worked tirelessly with the loving support of his mother and began speaking fluently by the age of 5," the page read.

Referencing the shooting, the page added, "This senseless act has left our family devastated and searching for answers as the investigation remains ongoing."

Princeton's mother, Creole Green — who set up the GoFundMe page — said of her son, per KABC, "I'm just devastated that my son's life... the door was shut in front of him at 9 years old."

The family wrote in the GoFundMe description, "Princeton was a beacon of joy, lighting up every room he entered with his humor and infectious smile. He was adored by his friends, family, and community, who all cherished the incredible person he was becoming."

The city of Compton said in a Sunday statement obtained by PEOPLE: “The City of Compton mourns the loss of the 9-year-old boy who was killed on Saturday evening in West Rancho Dominguez."

"Our hearts go out to the family as they cope with this tremendous loss. We encourage anyone with more information to call the LA County Sheriff’s Department at (310) 605-6500,” the statement added.

The city of Compton didn't immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE. The GoFundMe page had raised nearly $29,200 as of Monday, Dec. 2.
