Ajoomma: Hong Huifang screams with joy over 1st Golden Horse Best Actress nomination
SINGAPORE — Singaporean actress Hong Huifang was ecstatic after she found out that she has earned her first ever Golden Horse Awards nomination for her starring role in the movie Ajoomma.
Besides Hong’s Best Actress nomination, the Singapore-South Korea produced movie also clinched three other nominations in Taiwan’s most prestigious cinematic awards: Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay for Singaporean director He Shuming, and Best Supporting Actor for Korean actor Jung Dong-hwan.
In Ajoomma, Hong plays a Korean-drama obsessed Singaporean widow who tries to find new meaning in life but ends up getting lost while on a solo trip in South Korea.
According to a report by CNA Lifestyle, Hong and He were watching the announcement of the award nominations at a restaurant and they screamed with joy when they heard their names being announced.
Hong thanked He and producers Anthony Chen and Huang Wenhong for their belief in her and giving her a “wonderful” role in the movie, the report said.
“I really feel that my life and career have been worth living for all these years for this very special moment,” the 61-year-old actress told CNA Lifestyle about her four decades of acting experience.
Hong will be up against Cya Liu (Limbo), Sylvia Chang (A Light Never Goes Out), Tsai Hsuan-yen (Incantation), and Angela Yuen (The Narrow Road) for the Best Actress award.
The Golden Horse Awards winners will be announced on 19 November.
Ajoomma will hold its world premiere at the 27th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) on 7 October, the third Singapore movie to have earned the honour after Eric Khoo’s Mee Pok Man in 1995 and Royston Tan's 15 in 2003.
