Alessi launches limited edition of sculptural "Anna G" corkscrew

Italian design studio Alessi has released a limited edition version of its "Anna G" corkscrew in homage to the designer Anna Gili.

“Anna G. – 20th Anniversary” marks 20 years since the design, said to be inspired by Anna Gili, was originally created by Alessandro Mendini in 1994.

Featuring a large tribal mask and a collared dress skirt, the corkscrew is part kitchen utensil, part decorative sculpture.

The limited 20th anniversary edition is made from chrome-plated zamak and thermoplastic resin, with a brass mask. It comes in special triangular packaging decorated with sketches by Mendini.

The “Anna G” was originally created as a mascot for the Alessi-Philips project, which saw the Dutch company launch a small series of domestic kitchen appliances with Alessi.

“That collaboration was truly exceptional: for the first time in history, an Italian design factory had agreed to co-operate with a multinational company on a mass-produced consumer item,” explains Alberto Alessi.

Produced from chrome-plated zamak and thermoplastic resin, the “Anna G.” corkscrew debuted in 1994 in four colors: blue, red, yellow and green, with each dress featuring an elegant collar in a contrasting pastel color. Over the years new colors alongside special and limited editions have been launched, with over 1.5 million pieces sold worldwide.

The “Anna G.” corkscrew is on show in the permanent collections of institutions including La Triennale di Milano, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Groninger Museum of Groningen and the Museum Für Gestaltung of Zurich.
