Amal Clooney gives touching speech about George during AFI award ceremony

George Clooney received the 2018 AFI Lifetime Achievement Award on June 7, and the event was broadcast June 21. For the special occasion, Amal Clooney made the unprecedented move of sharing some thoughts about her husband.

Amal started her speech by admitting that she was nervous. “It’s somehow easier for me to address a court on behalf of a detainee than to speak publicly, as I’m doing for the first time tonight, about my husband.”

The human rights lawyer talked about how much she admired his work with war-ravaged and impoverished countries. “Even before I knew him, I admired George’s commitment to taking up causes — like exposing corruption in Sudan — before they were visible. And to taking moral stances, like opposing the war in Iraq, when it was far from popular to do so,” Amal said.

And while she appreciated all George has done for the world, she was most thankful for what he has done for her. She addressed him directly, saying, “My love, what I have found with you is the great love that I always hoped existed. And seeing you with our children, Ella and Alexander, is the greatest joy in my life.”

In his acceptance speech later, George compared the Lifetime Achievement Award to the greatest award he’s ever had: Amal’s love. Looking at her, he said, “You make every single day — every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday — feel as special as tonight. And tonight is very special, and I will treasure it always.”
