Whether you're relaxing after a long day, or fitting in some "me" time while commuting to work, there's nothing better than spending time lost in a good book. However, as much as we love them, books can take up valuable real estate in your home or bag and can cost a pretty penny if you're frequently looking for the latest and hottest titles.

One way to maintain your love of reading on-the-go is with an e-reader, like the Kindle. Amazon's portable device makes a great gift for yourself or for the book lover on your holiday shopping list and is currently on sale for 42 per cent off.

The details

Amazon’s Kindle e-reader allows you to download and store thousands of titles thanks to 4 GB of storage. Along with adjustable front light and glare-free touchscreen display to mimic real paper, the Kindle allows you to look up definitions of words, translate words and phrases and adjust text size to suit your preference.

Unlike your phone or other tech gadgets, one full charge of the Kindle can last up to four weeks - meaning you'll spend less time recharging your device and more time recharging your brain with a good book.

What people are saying

Amazon's Kindle has earned an impressive 4.5-star rating based on more than 2,500 customer reviews. The e-reader has been called a "lightweight" go-to for reading your favourite books anywhere, anytime thanks to the adjustable front light.

“The display is crisp and easily readable,” another wrote, adding that they can read indoors or outdoors without issues.

Another shopper called the Kindle their "favourite item in the world" even though they still love the look and feel of a paperback. The "convenience" of the Kindle being able to store all of your favourite titles while providing access to download a new book as soon as you finish your last read is what they consider "a fantastic thing."

Others say they're already Kindle fans, but the upgrade to a backlight was a "big difference" in the reading experience, since they can now read without turning on overhead lighting.

"On nights I have trouble sleeping I can read without keeping my husband awake," they said.

If you're on the fence about purchasing a Kindle for yourself or for a loved one this holiday season, there are some things to consider. Even though the battery "lasts forever" some shoppers have said that the sensitive touch screen can be fickle — and move you ahead four our five pages ahead or conversely, some reviewers said their screens were "sluggish" when they press some of the buttons. Some non-tech savvy shoppers said there was a slight learning curve to setting up the reader or navigating how to download new titles.

Verdict

If you or someone you know is frequently juggling books or looking to upgrade their e-reader, the Kindle might be for you. The affordable price tag is great for gift giving while the ability to read multiple titles on-the-go is a dream come true for book lovers.

However, if you're worried about a sensitive touch screen or not the best with new technology, the Kindle might not be the best option. However, there are plenty of easy-to-follow guides on YouTube that can help make your set up a breeze.
