Amazon releases first-look at The Underground Railroad series from Moonlight's Barry Jenkins
A first-look at Barry Jenkins' new Amazon series The Underground Railroad has been released by the streamer.
The show is set in an alternate history in which the Underground Railroad, a network of hidden routes, safe houses and abolitionists that helped slaves escape from freedom, is an actual railroad.
The Oscar-winning Moonlight director is overseeing the adaptation of Colson Whitehead's novel, and from the looks of the first images (at the bottom), the series is set to be pretty powerful.
Filming wrapped towards the end of last month on The Underground Railroad, which stars Thuso Mbedu, Chase W. Dillon, Aaron Pierre, Joel Edgerton, Damon Herriman and William Jackson Harper.
Alongside the series, it announced this week that Jenkins will oversee a new sequel to Disney's 2019 live-action The Lion King.
The movie is set to take inspiration from The Godfather Part II and delve into Mufasa's past, and also continue with photorealistic animals and a strong focus on music.

Jenkins seemed pretty excited to take on the project, saying in a statement: "Helping my sister raise two young boys during the '90s, I grew up with these characters.
"Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true."

The Underground Railroad will stream on Amazon Prime Video.
