Amazon team meets Indonesian president, promises US$938M investment

Amazon will invest in Indonesia for the next 10 years, starting with its cloud service AWS

The Alexa speaker, one of Amazon’s products. The tech giant is committed to invest US$938 million in Indonesia for the next 10 years.

US tech giant Amazon has been accelerating its effort to enter the Indonesian market. Amazon CTO and VP Werner Vogels has met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo and promised an IDR14 trillion (US$938 million) investment for the next 10 years. The cloud sector, as represented through its subsidiary Amazon Web Services (AWS), will be its first target.

There is no further information about whether the company will also launch its e-commerce service in the market.

When receiving the representatives from Amazon, the president was accompanies by Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani and Head of Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Tom Lembong. Amazon has previously sat down with Mulyani to discuss taxation matters.

As quoted by VIVA, the minister said, “They have promised to invest IDR 14 trillion (US$938 million) in Indonesia for the next 10 years. Its implementation … will begin from their cloud services aspect of their business.”

Vogels’s visit to Indonesia coincides with the AWS Startup Day 2018 event in Jakarta. During the event, Vogels stated that the company has no plan to build a local server in Indonesia and will step up cloud technology education with its AWS Academy event. AWS has also set up an office in Indonesia and recruited local talents since December 2017.
