America, Juan Dela Cruz Band In Concert

16 October 2012

Two veteran group acts from the same era are firing up the local concert scene this week.

America and Juan Dela Cruz Band perform in two separate occasions, with the former visiting Manila for their scheduled concert at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday (October 17), while the latter headlining Hard Rock Café in Makati for a special show on Saturday (October 20) dubbed "Super Sessions."

"Marami sa musicians sa era namin buhay pa rin hanggang ngayon dahil sa materials. Yun ang susi nun, the songs themselves," said Juan Dela Cruz Band bass player Mike Hanopol.

Hanopol has reunited with former mates Pepe Smith and Wally Gonzalez to resume their live gig career. Their group is best known for hits such as "Titser's Enemi No. 1," "Balong Malalim," "No Touch," "Kahit Anong Mangyari," and "Himig Natin," the band's signature piece considered to have given birth to Manila Sound. Recently, they played at the Greenhills parking lot for the Finals of "Sessionistas 2012," a competition that pitted some of the finest amateur college bands.

For their gig on Saturday, the group is expected to highlight the reproduction of their old songs as being planned by the group's manager Bryan Garcia who also handles Pinoy Rock act protégé Hatankaru.

Smith, who appears in Hatankaru's EP release, advised the young music enthusiasts, "Dapat makinig sila ng maraming sounds at i-enjoy lang nila ang buhay nila. Laging rakenrol."

America, on the other hand, is performing with another nostalgia act Kalapana, famous for the classic song "Hurt." Jeff Beckley and Dewey Bunell, who have kept America as active live performers for decades, are expected to churn out their greatest hits that include "You Can Do Magic," "Inspector Mills," "Tin Man," "Ventura Highway," "I Need You," "All My Life," "Sister Golden Hair," and "A Horse With No Name," the track that made them instant stars in the '70s.

Incidentally, both bands also carry names paying homage to their motherlands and have two singer-songwriter members.
