Amir Khan Makes Good On Prediction, Taps Honorio Banario In Round One

Heading into his ONE: BEYOND THE HORIZON bout against Honorio Banario, Amir Khan predicted he would finish the former ONE Featherweight World Champion in the first round.

He stayed true to his word by in the evening’s lightweight co-main event, at the Baoshan Arena in Shanghai, China, by stopping “The Rock” with a rear-naked choke at 4:34 of the first round.

The man with the most knockouts in ONE Championship history went to work right away on Saturday, 8 September, throwing heavy leather at his Filipino opponent.

Banario fired back, but Khan countered with a double-leg takedown that put him on his back.

The contest soon returned to the feet, but again, the 23-year-old from Singapore countered another combination with a takedown attempt, before moving around to take the back and drag Banario to the mat.

Despite the improvements he has made with his training partners at Team Lakay in recent times, “The Rock” could not stop Khan from quickly threatening with a rear-naked choke.

Khan battled to secure his grip, but his attempts were defended well at first. However, he kept his composure and waited to force an opening.

When he started to use his feet to try and trap a limb, Banario allowed Khan an opportunity to slide an arm all the way around his neck and secure it in position, forcing the tap.

“I feel amazing,” the Evolve athlete said after the bout.

“My coach told me to be patient. I knew the choke was there. There are so many BJJ black belts on our team. I knew I could submit Honorio.

“I’m fighting so hard every day for the title. Hopefully, I’ll get it soon.”

By recording his eighth win in his last nine bouts, Khan also snapped Banario’s five-bout winning streak.

He also set the record for the most wins (11) and the most stoppages (10) in ONE Championship history.
