Angler feared drowned in Kota Tinggi river


KOTA TINGGI: A man is feared drowned following an incident during a fishing trip at Sungai Sedili, Jambatan Haji Mohd Lazim, Sedili Besar here, on Saturday.

Azizi Amir, 45, from Kampung Semayong, Sedili Besar, was on his boat, fishing with a friend, when strong currents began to sweep his boat towards the river’s rapids.

It is believed that he jumped into the river to try to stop his boat from being swept away. He disappeared shortly after.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Rahmat Othman said police received information on the incident at 12noon.

Rahmat said a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched, involving six police personnel and one boat, nine firemen with one boat, six members of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and residents of Kampong Semayong.

He said the SAR operation continued yesterday at 8am, and involved 57 people, including personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, the police, the MMEA, the Fisheries Department and local fishermen. -- BERNAMA
