Anne Hathaway Got Body-Shamed In The Gym, Just Weeks After Giving Birth

There’s a crazy amount of pressure on new mums. Women are berated if they haven’t “snapped back” to their pre-pregnancy figure quickly enough - and labelled unhealthy if they slim down too fast. But mothers are fighting back. Everyone from “New Girl” actress Zooey Deschanel to mum blogger Constance Hall have made a point of proving that all bodies are beautiful, whether they’re saggy, slim, covered in stretch marks or completely unscarred.

And now Anne Hathaway’s getting involved in the campaigning to help society see that new mums have enough going on without worrying about how they look. Appearing on The Ellen Degeneres Show, the actress, who gave birth to her first child Jonathan just eight weeks ago, admitted that she isn’t giving in to all the post-baby bod BS.

The 33-year-old says she’s barely managed to leave the house since Jonathan arrived, but has made it to her West Hollywood gym three times - which we reckon is pretty darn commendable.

“I walk in, I’m like, yeah, I work out with five-pound weights, but I pushed a baby out of my body so I feel good right now,” she told Ellen. “I don’t care what I look like, I feel great.”

But during one of these visits, she felt body-shamed as a personal trainer approached her and asked if she would like some pointers.

She then told the trainer that she’s a new mother and gave birth just weeks earlier - but his response wasn’t what she’d hoped. “I’m expecting him to say the thing that you say when someone say’s they’ve had a baby, which is ‘Oh my God. You look great!’. Doesn’t matter if it’s true. If somebody says, ‘I had a baby 13 years ago’, you say, ‘You look great!’”

Instead, the trainer replied, “Trying to lose the baby weight?”

However, the actress wasn’t about to let one trainer get to her. She replied: “No … It’s a little bit too soon to worry about weight. I’m just trying to regain my strength.”

This isn’t the first time Anne’s stood her ground. Earlier this year, she posted an Instagram photo of her baby bump explaining why she should be the one who gets to choose when her pregnancy figure is exposed to the world.

“So, posting a bikini pic is a little out of character for me, but just now while I was at the beach I noticed I was being photographed,” she captioned the photo. “I figure if this kind of photo is going to be out in the world it should at least be an image that makes me happy (and be one that was taken with my consent. And with a filter :)”
