Another number one for "Ip Man 3"
5 Jan – It's another good week for Donnie Yen-starrer "Ip Man 3" as the movie keeps its grip on the top spot at the Malaysia and Singapore weekend box office for 31 December 2015 to 3 January 2016.
Meanwhile, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" spends its third week in the U.S. also at number one, having grossed USD90.2 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo. It currently has a worldwide gross of USD1.5 billion.
The epic saga is currently the second highest-grossing movie in the U.S., beating the USD656.8 million collection of 1997's "Titanic" with its USD742.2 domestic gross. It is looking close to beating current record holder, 2009's "Avatar", which has a gross of USD760.5 million.
Will Ferrell "Daddy's Home", also co-starring Mark Wahlberg, stays put at number two in the U.S. The comedy made another USD29.2 million, contributing to its current USD116.3 million worldwide gross.
Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" made an impressive leap from number ten to two last weekend, though making only another USD15.7 million, bringing its domestic total to USD29 million, still a far cry from its USD44 million production budget.
While the Force may be strong on the other side of the world, over in Malaysia, the third instalment of the Hong Kong franchise, "Ip Man 3", remains king. It is the highest grossing Chinese movie of all time in the country, having collected over RM22 million in 11 days. Going more marital than martial, the movie nonetheless still manages to pull fans into cinemas, allowing it to spend another week at number one.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" took number two, while Hindi movie "Dilwale" climbed up a spot to number three, switching places with "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip". In Singapore, there are no changes to the top three as "Ip Man 3" still reigns. It grossed a record-breaking SGD5.7 million, the first Chinese movie to do so in just 11 days.
At number two is still the recent instalment of the "Star Wars" franchise and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip" did not drive off the third spot.
Malaysia's new movies for last weekend are "The Wave", "The 33", "Daddy's Home", "Anniversary", "Apartment", "Detective Chinatown", "Tharkappu", "A Walk In The Woods" and "Life".
New releases in Singapore last weekend are "The 5th Wave", "Tharkappu", "Life", "Daddy's Home" and "Suffragette".
