PETALING JAYA, May 19 — Assets seized in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) investigations could surpass the illicit billions amassed by Ferdinand Marcos and his family during their 20-year-rule of the Philippines, PKR de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

This follows asset seizures believed to belong to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Wednesday night. Items which have been seized so far include 284 boxes of designer handbags and 72 suitcases containing jewelry, cash and other possessions.

Anwar told the Financial Times that the asset seizure would surpass Ferdinand Marcos’ wife, Imelda who reportedly amassed thousands of expensive shoes and numerous other luxury items such as designer clothing and handbags during her husband’s 20-year-rule.

“I think we will probably register an impressive record surpassing that of Imelda and the rest.”

Anwar added that the level of corruption uncovered by the 1MDB investigations is “mind boggling”, coming from an administration that “talks about helping the poor”.

“These guys are quite sick-minded.”
