JOHOR BARU: Newly-elected PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will step down when he becomes prime minister.
He said now was not the right time for Dr Wan Azizah to relinquish her Cabinet post.
“Why should Dr Wan Azizah quit the post now? If she quits now, then PKR will also lose the post of deputy prime minister,” said Anwar at a Bicara Maal Hijrah programme titled “Hijrah ke arah Malaysia Baru” at Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar, here.
He added that he would not join the government immediately if he won the Port Dickson parliamentary seat in the upcoming by-election.
”As I have told Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, when I win (the Port Dickson parliamentary seat), I will not join the government as I want to give way for Dr Mahathir to carry out his responsibilities until my turn comes.
“So, be patient. When I become PM, Dr Wan Azizah will step down. When? When it is my turn to become PM. People are bringing up this issue so I have to explain.”
Present were Johor PKR chairman Hassan Karim, deputy Johor PKR chairman Jimmy Puah and Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon.
A news portal yesterday quoted National Patriots Association president Brigadier General (R) Mohamad Arshad Raja as saying that Anwar was creating a family dynasty in Parliament.
Arshad also said that Anwar should have asked his wife, Dr Wan Azizah, or daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, to vacate their seats instead of asking Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, a former senior navy officer, to vacate his Port Dickson seat. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
