KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of Petron Fuel International Sdn Bhd as one of the fuel suppliers for government transportation could trigger moral conflict, says Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Najib, who is former prime minister, said there are many who believe that Petronas, instead, should take the helm.
“Many think that is wiser for Petronas to be the oil supplier for government transportation as the international-recognised oil company is owned by the government and has become pride of the country.
“The appointment poses conflict, at least morally,” he told reporters after the “1Malaysia Merdeka Picnic” at Perdana Botical Garden, here, on Friday.
Later in a Facebook post, the Pekan member of parliament questioned why Petronas’ source of income is allowed to be “harassed” by the government as it is a state-owned company.
He said Petronas covers almost every area in the country and with Shell, is adequate enough to supply fuel for official government vehicles.
He also questioned why the government had sidelined Caltex and BHP, which he said have almost a similar number of stations in the country if the government is citing “convenience” as a reason.
On Thursday, the Finance Ministry had clarified that Petron Fuel International Sdn Bhd was not the sole supplier of petrol and diesel for government transportation.
It emphasised that Petronas and Shell have been the suppliers of petrol and diesel for the government since 1997 to cater to the needs of the official vehicles.
The statement was referring to a letter dated Aug 3 which had gone viral on social media, on the appointment of Petron as a fuel supplier for government vehicles.
It was reported that the letter was issued by Umno supreme council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, who claimed that Petron’s appointment was linked to the Mirzan Mahathir, who is the son of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Lokman criticised the move, claiming that in the past, the government only appointed the national petroleum company, Petronas, as the fuel supplier for the government’s official transportation.
