Apparently, Jakarta and Bangkok are some of the cheapest getaways for the August long weekend holiday

Even if you’re not one to look ahead for long weekends, you would’ve realized that we have one coming up in August, thanks to National Day on Friday (Aug 9) and Hari Raya Haji on Sunday (Aug 11), which makes the following day a public holiday.

By now, most people would’ve probably made the most of the four-day break, but still, it’s not too late to book those travel tickets. According to a study by financial research platform ValueChampion, which analyzed data from travel search engine Kayak to come up with a list of five most affordable getaway for Singapore residents that weekend, Jakarta emerged tops, with roundtrip flights starting from S$221 (no elaboration on which airline, though we did a quick search on another flight booking site, Skyscanner, and saw return flights for these dates and prices from Jetstar, Lion Air and Scoot) — as well as three-star hotel stays from S$33, and five-star nights from S$150.

Here’s where our Coconuts sister cities come in handy for bucket list activities: These include strolling through museums, stocking up on local makeup brands, and updating your wardrobe with homegrown fashion labels, while chomping your way through the city’s essential eats and stopping for a jolt of caffeine every now and then.

Kuala Lumpur, a favorite for Singaporeans, slid easily into second place of affordable holiday trips, with two-way airfare starting from S$272, three-star hotels from S$36, and five-star ones from S$122. Top things to do in the Malaysian metropolis include checking out live music joints, going vintage shopping, waking up late for brunch, gorging on dim sum, and hunting down the best cocktail bars it has to offer.

Another Malaysian destination took third place, with airline tickets from S$319 to Kuching, plus three-star and five-star stays for the low price of S$34 and S$47 respectively. The place, friendly to families, will appeal to nature enthusiasts, with gardens, beaches, and wildlife activities.

Of course, you can’t have a travel-related list and leave Bangkok out, since the Thai city is our go-to for vacations filled with shopping, good food, and massages. Airfare here is a little higher, with prices starting from S$400, but hotels remain relatively low at S$44 and S$171 for three- and five-star nights. Oh, and it helps that Bangkok’s got unconventionally romantic things you can do with your partner, as well as city tours, retro cafes, sake spots, speakeasies, and cold brews galore.

Coming in fifth, the colonial town of Makassar in Indonesia is a not-so-typical option with history and nature activities. Airfare starts from S$453, with budget and luxe stays from S$27 and S$100.

But hey, if a spontaneous trip is too rushed for the OCD planner in you, start anticipating the seven long weekends waiting around the corner in 2020.
