Arsenal's Mesut Ozil surprises Barnet students with free school meals

Children at a school in Barnet received a surprised on Tuesday after they collected a free lunchtime meal, courtesy of Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil.

Selected children across the country are usually entitled to a free school meal, but that is not the case during half-term holidays.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has lobbied the Government to change their policy, but it has so far been rejected.

Ozil has shown his support by supplying children at the Whitings Hill school in Barnet with a free meal organised by the German.

Around 70 children at the school will receive free lunches for the rest of the week.

The 32-year-old has teamed up with local charities to provide the meals and it is understood other schools in Barnet, Enfield and Hertfordshire have been benefiting since the Covid-19 pandemic hit in March.

“The school wanted to say thank you for his kindness and generosity,” said headteacher Sejal Patel.
