Chinese technology companies are rushing to unveil reasoning models - advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models designed to take more time to "think and reflect" before generating responses - as they move to narrow China's gap with the US in the field. Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group Holding, was the latest to offer a preview of its own reasoning model QwQ, akin to OpenAI's o1, which specialises in maths, programming and scientific exploration, which the Microsoft-back
TechCrunchStudy of ChatGPT citations makes dismal reading for publishers
As more publishers cut content licensing deals with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, a study put out this week by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism -- looking at how the AI chatbot produces citations (i.e. The research, conducted at Columbia Journalism School, examined citations produced by ChatGPT after it was asked to identify the source of sample quotations plucked from a mix of publishers -- some of which had inked deals with OpenAI and some which had not. The Center took block quotes from 10 stories apiece produced by a total of 20 randomly selected publishers (so 200 different quotes in all) -- including content from The New York Times (which is currently suing OpenAI in a copyright claim); The Washington Post (which is unaffiliated with the ChatGPT maker); the Financial Times (which has inked a licensing deal); and others.

Tesla Rolls Out New Version of Its Self-Driving Software
Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s vice president of AI software, tweeted Saturday night that version 13 of Tesla’s highest-level driver assistance software called Full Self-Driving began rolling out to customers. Tesla believes it’s the product that will ultimately turn the millions of Tesla vehicles on roads into truly self-driving cars. Tesla stock was up 1.5% in premarket trading at $350.29 while and futures were down 0.2% and 0.1%, respectively.
