Aston Villa vs Manchester United - LIVE!

Debutant Philippe Coutinho came off the bench to inspire an Aston Villa comeback in a gripping 2-2 draw against Man United at Villa Park.

United appeared to be on course for a second win of the week against Steven Gerrard’s side as Bruno Fernandes struck in each half - the first goal courtesy of a dreadful error by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Villa were much improved in the second half but Coutinho was being readied for his arrival off the bench when Fernandes powered home an unstoppable effort in the 67th minute.

Coutinho was immediately involved though and 10 minutes later he played a big part as Villa got themselves back into the match with a well-worked goal that was struck home by Jacob Ramsey.

Brazil’s former Liverpool playmaker Coutinho then sent the home fans wild with a tap-in from Ramsey’s excellent cut back in the 82nd minute as Ville earned a deserved point.

Match report

Philippe Coutinho came off the bench to inspire Aston Villa to a thrilling comeback as they earned a 2-2 draw against Man United at Villa Park.

Bruno Fernandes scored in both halves as United went two goals up and looked to be on course for a comfortable win and one of their best performances under Ralf Rangnick.

Coutinho was introduced just after that second goal, and after Jacob Ramsey had halved the deficit, the Brazilian got his new club level and started his Villa career in some style.

Six games, three wins, two draws, one defeat in the league under Ralf Rangnick.

Matches against Crystal Palace, Norwich, Newcastle, Burnley, Wolves and Aston Villa.

On paper it looked to be a favourable start for the interim boss, but there’s no sign yet of United clicking into top gear under the German.

More from Coutinho...

19:44 , Matt Verri

“There’s been many ups and downs, but it’s already in the past,” Coutinho said.

“I’m here to focus on the objectives of the club and the manager. I want to do a good job to help my teammates and the club.”

He’s certainly done that in his first 22 minutes in a Villa shirt.

Coutinho on debut goal

Villa’s new signing is delighted to be back in the Premier League after his goal off the bench.

“I missed these games, I missed the Premier League,” Coutinho tells Sky Sports.

“It was a good start, we had a good game. We kept believing to the end that we could win the game, but we didn’t lose.

“I was a little bit [nervous]. I don’t speak English very well, so I prefer to play and be on the pitch than just talking. I’m happy, we move on and I’ll work hard to improve and be in better shape.”

What it means...

19:39 , Matt Verri

United stay seventh in the table after this evening’s draw. They are five points behind West Ham in fourth, but they do have a game in hand over David Moyes’ side.

For Villa, they’re up to 13th and they would have taken a lot of confidence from their performances in both matches against Man United this week.

Coutinho off the mark...

FULL-TIME

Aston Villa 2-2 Man United

It finishes level after a breathless final 20 minutes at Villa Park.

A Fernandes brace looked to have wrapped up the three points for United, but Ramsey and Coutinho turned it around for the hosts and they earn a hard-fought point.

19:26 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: We’re back with the football!

Buendia receiving treatment, that’s taken up a couple of minutes so we’ll have added time at the end of added time.

19:24 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: A couple of minutes of injury time left... and the coverage has cut to an advert.

Who knows what is happening at Villa Park!

19:23 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Four minutes of added time.

It’s Villa who look the more likely to snatch a winner. United sitting deep, they look happy to take what they have.

19:21 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Van de Beek and Lingard on for United, replacing Fernandes and Greenwood.

Just a couple of minutes for them to make an impact.

19:19 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Coutinho keeps getting on the ball for Villa and he looks really bright.

Buendia tries to play it through to the Brazilian, but it’s cut out. Both teams seem a bit unsure how to approach the last few minutes. Go for the winner but risk a late sucker-punch, or settle for a point?

19:17 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Great atmosphere at Villa Park now, they sense their could still be a famous winner for their team.

United look stunned after this turnaround. They were in complete control when Fernandes got his second.

COUTINHO HAS A DEBUT GOAL!

Incredible turnaround from Villa. It’s a brilliant move from the home side too.

Buendia plays it through to Ramsey who has made a great run into the box. He plays it across the face of goal, Varane can’t cut it out and Coutinho has a tap in at the back post.

19:11 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Fernandes away down the left, as United try to find the goal that would kill this off for good.

Cross is blocked, and loops up to Martinez. Villa back on the attack.

GOAL! Aston Villa 1-2 Man United | Jacob Ramsey 77'

19:09 , Matt Verri

GAME ON NOW!

Villa are right back in this. It comes after Mings brings it forward out of defence and beats a couple of challenges.

Coutinho has it in the box, Fred gets a touch on it but he can only send it straight into the path of Ramsey, who fires past De Gea.

19:08 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Cash played in down the right and he fires a cross into the box. Watkins tries to divert it at goal, but doesn’t get enough on the header and it’s out for a throw-in.

Chukwuemeka on for Ings as Gerrard makes his final change.

19:06 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Nearly falls to Coutinho in the box!

Ings tries to lay it off to the Brazilian, it bounces around and Matic then slides in to stop it dropping for Coutinho. In doing so he sends it back to De Gea though, who has to quickly react and get it clear.

19:03 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Not if Villa do things like that. Space for Buendia and he tries to send it out wide to Digne, but the pass is about six feet over the head of the Frenchman.

United happy to sit back, knowing they have a real threat on the counter.

19:01 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Coutinho on for Villa. He’d been ready to come on for a couple of minute, and in that time United’s lead was doubled.

Can he inspire a late comeback?

GOAL! Aston Villa 0-2 Man United | Bruno Fernandes 67'

18:59 , Matt Verri

FERNANDES HAS HIS SECOND!

And it comes from a Villa mistake as they play out from the back. Sanson is under pressure and tries to play it back to Mings, but there’s nowhere near enough on the pass.

Fred pounces on it, plays it inside to Fernandes and he bursts into the box before firing it past Martinez. Great finish.

18:57 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Cash bursts forward and gets to the byline. Ings nearly gets on the end of the cut-back, but the United defenders do well to crowd him out.

Villa have another chance to break, but Buendia’s pass is massively overhit.

Fernandes down after Luiz stands on his foot. Didn’t get a free-kick, much to his frustration.

18:55 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Ramsey and Buendia combine, before Ramsey jinks past a couple of defenders and goes down as Lindelof barges into him on the edge of the box.

No free-kick given. Harsh on Ramsey that, looked to have been clearly cut off. Luiz then brings down Fred cynically on the halfway line.

18:53 , Matt Verri

61 mins: SO CLOSE!

Greenwood bursts down the right wing, and Ramsey is probably expecting him to cut inside onto his left foot.

He doesn’t though, continuing straight into the box and the shot is inches away from finding the far corner.

18:52 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Nearly an incredibly costly error from Cash.

Not sure what he’s trying, as he cushions it across his own box straight to Elanga. He drives inside and gets a shot away, and it’s not far from nestling in the bottom corner. Cash a very relieved man.

18:51 , Matt Verri

59 mins: United on the attack for the first time since Elanga’s shot in the opening minute of the half.

Greenwood brings it inside and no Villa shirt comes out to close him down. Eventually goes for goal from distance, and it gets a deflection to give United a corner.

Good ball from Fernandes, but Watkins gets it away.

18:49 , Matt Verri

57 mins: More space for Villa and they work it wide to the left, as Buendia plays Digne in.

Poor first touch narrows the angle, but he still goes for goal and it’s well wide from the Frenchman.

18:47 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Great play from Digne, skips inside and completely beats Dalot.

Lays it back to the edge of the box, Buendia curls a first-time effort at goal. Straight at De Gea. Villa have been really good since the break - 75% possession they’ve had.

18:44 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Watkins should shoot from the edge of the box, but delays and Fernandes can get a foot in. Villa man catches the midfielder, and Fernandes goes down.

Watkins tries to pull him back up to his feet... an offer that was not appreciated.

18:42 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Buendia tries to slide a ball through to Cash, doesn’t quite get the angle right though and Lindelof gets it away.

Fred with a decent run into the box, Greenwood plays it through to him but too much on it and Martinez is out to claim.

Entertaining start to the half.

18:41 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Matic needs to be careful. Catches Buendia and the referee awards the free-kick. Already on a yellow card, the United midfielder, so can’t afford many more of those.

Watkins swings a cross into the box, Varane heads it away before Ings can get on the end of it.

Ramsey drives inside and gets a shot away towards the near post, De Gea gets down well to save.

18:39 , Matt Verri

46 mins: Sanson brought down by a sliding Fernandes, not a great challenge. And after about 30 seconds of the half, Fernandes is into the book.

He is not thrilled with that decision, it’s fair to say.

United straight on the attack and Elanga gets a shot away, but Martinez is up to the task.

Back underway

18:37 , Matt Verri

Konsa is indeed off, Hause on in his place. Only change at the break.

We’re off and running again at Villa Park!

18:36 , Matt Verri

Konsa was back out on the pitch briefly, having a jog around to test out that injury.

Doesn’t look like it’s gone well, he stops almost immediately. Looks like his match is over.

18:29 , Matt Verri

Seven shots on target in that first half - three for Villa, four for United.

There was a decent ten-minute spell for the home team where they pinned United back, but on the whole they’ve been below-par. Could we see Coutinho introduced at some point to help that?

Big mistake from Martinez...

18:24 , Matt Verri

HALF-TIME

18:20 , Matt Verri

Aston Villa 0-1 Man United

And that’s half-time, with United ahead at the break thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ early goal. That came after Emi Martinez let the long-range strike straight through his hands.

Villa had some bright moments as the half wore on, but they’ve been disappointing on the whole.

18:18 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: The Villa centre-back is on his feet again. Looks like he’s going to continue through until at least half-time.

Poor clearance from De Gea nearly lets Villa break, but they can’t control and United have it back.

18:16 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Konsa looks in a fair bit of pain. Was down hurt earlier but got back up, and having cleared a ball out of play and he’s on the floor receiving treatment again.

Three minutes added on, but there will be more than that once play resumes.

18:14 , Matt Verri

43 mins: That would have been some start to his Villa career!

Cash plays an early cross into the box, into a great area. Too much pace on it for Watkins but it runs through to Digne who has made the run at the back post and he fires an effort at goal. De Gea saves well.

18:11 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Clumsy, late challenge from Cash as he dives in and goes through the back of Elanga. Perhaps fortunate to avoid a yellow-card.

Villa easing the pressure on United by playing sloppy passes that allow the visitors to quickly counter.

18:10 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Villa really overplay that one though.

Digne and Ramsey combined on the left, before it eventually comes back into a central area. Buendia lays it off for Ings, but rather than shoot he decides to dummy it and let it run through to Luiz.

Midfielder isn’t expecting it, and brings down Fernandes as he slides in.

18:09 , Matt Verri

38 mins: It’s the home team’s best spell of the match by a while, they’re sustaining the attacks.

Buendia involved in everything, trying to connect the play. Ball is lifted over for Cash on the right, but it skips off the turf and behind. A chance for United to regroup.

18:06 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Digne is on corner duties on the other side of the pitch.

Lovely ball, Buendia makes the run to the near post and sends a really strong header at goal... De Gea saves, and United can clear.

Much better from Villa all of a sudden.

18:05 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Digne flicks it back inside, looking for Watkins, but it’s deflected behind for a corner. Villa won’t mid that, Konsa and Mings jog forward.

Luiz whips it in, Watkins gets up well but Lindelof defends it really well. Another corner though.

18:03 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Villa’s first shot of the match, even if it is an extremely tame one.

United lose it and the home side can break quickly with Buendia. He brings it forward before sliding it wide to Watkins, who tries to curl it into the far corner but it’s straight at De Gea.

18:01 , Matt Verri

30 mins: A rare touch for Danny Ings. He draws the challenge from Matic, knocks it past him and goes down as the Man United midfielder trips him up.

Matic joins Digne in the book.

17:58 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Telles goes for goal from the free-kick, Martinez beats it away.

It’s out to Greenwood on the edge of the box, he works it onto his right-foot and lets fly... just wide. Great effort.

17:58 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Really poor defending from Digne, and he’s into the book on debut.

Dalot has it out wide, and for some reason the Villa left-back flies into a challenge. Ball gets chopped back inside, and Digne brings Dalot down. Easy decision for the referee.

17:56 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Villa with a sustained spell of possession, but they’re barely progressing it beyond on the halfway line. United sitting in a solid shape and the home side are struggling to break that down.

Ramsey with a nice pass through to Watkins, finally there is some space for them. Digne whips in a cross, Dalot blocks it well though.

17:53 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Sanson swings a hopeful ball into the box, nowhere near enough on it to reach Watkins though and Varane can volley it away.

Villa then give it away on the halfway line and Elanga bursts forward with it. Goes down in the box under a challenge... no penalty.

17:51 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Cavani having to receive treatment after challenging for that ball, collided awkwardly with Digne.

Back on now though, as Martinez is off his line to claim the corner.

17:49 , Matt Verri

19 mins: GREAT SAVE!

Telles with a wonderful ball into the box, Cavani makes the run to the near post but can’t get a touch on it. It falls to Greenwood though, six yards out, and Martinez comes flying out to smother the shot.

Ball wouldn’t quite drop in time for Greenwood.

17:48 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Villa fans trying to urge their team to play forward - the home team haven’t offered anything in attack so far.

Ramsey and Sanson are getting the ball in midfield, but not many options when they look up in front of them.

17:45 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Fernandes seeing plenty of the ball already.

Comes deep to pick it up and sprays a long crossfield pass towards Dalot, but it’s just over the head of the right-back and out for a goal-kick.

17:42 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Villa really need to settle. Fred clips a ball into the box and Elanga gets up well at the far post, but his header is wide.

Rangnick will be delighted with what he’s seen so far, good energy from United. Can they keep this up?

17:41 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Strange pass from Luiz. Think he tried to play a reverse ball through to Buendia, but he absolutely blazed it forward and nowhere near his teammate.

Telles briefly down, but he won’t need any treatment and is quickly back up.

17:39 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Well that’s going to help United settle, an early gift.

Away fans in fine voice, and the players on the pitch look really comfortable. They’ve started well, haven’t seen anything from Watkins and Buendia so far.

GOAL! Aston Villa 0-1 Man United | Bruno Fernandes 6'

17:37 , Matt Verri

SHOCKER FROM MARTINEZ!

United have the lead in bizarre circumstances. Telles stood on the ball as he ran over it to allow Fernandes to bring it forward from the free-kick.

He lets fly from range, it’s straight at Martinez... but he has made a complete mess of it and it rolls over the line. Dreadful mistake.

17:35 , Matt Verri

4 mins: All United so far, game being played deep in Villa territory.

Telles already having joy getting forward on the left. He does so again, gets a nudge from Sanson and wins the free-kick.

17:33 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Nice ball down the line from Telles, and Konsa has to get across and put it behind for a corner. Early chance to put the ball into the box for United.

Fernandes takes, Digne heads it away but it’s another corner.

Second time lucky for United? No. Another poor ball and Cash hammers it away.

KICK-OFF!

17:30 , Matt Verri

United kick things off, and we are underway!

17:29 , Matt Verri

Here we go then, players are out. Great atmosphere at Villa Park.

Home side will be looking to put in a similar display to the one at Old Trafford on Monday night, just with a bit more of a clinical edge this time.

17:25 , Matt Verri

Coutinho has been out on the Villa Park pitch, clapping the fans as they give him a warm welcome.

Remains to be seen how fit he is, and whether he’s ready for a cameo off the bench in the second-half.

Steven Gerrard on new signings

“They’re two players with real pedigree, international experience,” Gerrard said.

“Two technically gifted players that have played at the highest level, and have been to big clubs before and produced high-level performances, and also won there as well.

“It’s important that if we’re going to add to the dressing room, they’ve got pedigree and they also know how to win, and they’re going to help the young players with them elite standards.”

Victory this evening would take United into the top six. That would move them within three points of West Ham, who United will have a game in hand over after this match.

Plenty of incentive, will today be the day it clicks into gear for Rangnick and his side?

Rangnick on team selection

16:53 , Matt Verri

Ralf Rangnick has been discussing his team selection, with Harry Maguire on the bench and Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo not in the squad.

“Harry was out for two weeks, he doesn’t have any problems anymore, but I decided to keep the two centre-backs from the cup game,” Rangnick said.

Confirms that Ronaldo misses out with hip flexor injury, while Marcus Rashford suffered a dead leg in training and is unable to play as a result.

Big news for Villa is that Lucas Digne comes straight into the team to make his debut. Targett drops to the bench as a result.

For United, it’s Elanga and Cavani up front as Ronaldo misses out on the squad entirely. Lindelof and Varane start at centre-back, with Maguire only on the bench.

Gerrard: We can cause United problems

15:59 , Matt Verri

Steven Gerrard was disappointed that his side were beaten at Old Trafford in the FA Cup, but the Villa boss is hopeful his players will take confident from the display they produced.

“The only frustration I had the other night is we didn’t progress in the FA Cup, which is important to us,” Gerrard said.

“The only way to get the feeling and the mood back that I want is to get a big result tomorrow. It’s a unique situation, playing the same team twice in a short space of time, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to bounce back.

“If we can find a similar level of performance, be a little bit more ruthless in the final third and the big calls on the night go in our favour, I’ve got no doubt we can get the result we want.

“We know the quality and the level of player that’s coming to Villa Park and the challenge ahead of us. We’ll be respectful of that, but the players should take big belief and confidence that when they’re at their best, we can create problems for Manchester United.”

Ralf Rangnick on full-back options

15:50 , Matt Verri

The United boss has rotated his full-backs since joining the club, with Alex Telles and Diogo Dalot battling Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a place in the starting lineup.

Rangnick talked in depth about the players, and the different options they bring to the team.

“I’m more than happy to have two players like Luke and Alex for that position as a left-back,” Rangnick said.

“The same is true for the right-back position with Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. We have, in each of those positions, two good players and depending on who is fully fit, fully fresh, do we need to rest somebody?

“As with Luke, it’s the case right now he is suspended, so it’s important to have two players with a little bit of a different profile. I think Alex is a little more of an offensive wing-back/full-back. The same is true of Diogo Dalot on the right-hand side.

“The other two English full-backs are both defensively and offensively balanced players, so that gives the coach lots of options depending on which team you’re going to play.”

Prediction

Backed by a home crowd and impressive in the FA Cup game despite a loss, we’re plumping for a Villa win as United continue to suffer teething problems under Rangnick.

Aston Villa to win 2-1.

Man United team news

Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay will miss the game through suspension, meaning Alex Telles and Nemanja Matic could return to the side.

Cristiano Ronaldo is hopeful he will be in contention, alongside Jadon Sancho after both missed the FA Cup win.

Elsewhere, Diogo Dalot could miss out after suffering a nasty gash on Monday.

Predicted Manchester United XI (4-2-2-2): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Varane, Telles; Fred, Matic; Sancho, Greenwood; Ronaldo, Cavani.

Aston Villa team news

15:23 , Matt Verri

Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho are both available to make their Villa debuts, though Steven Gerrard’s comments in the build-up to the match suggest the Brazilian may be slowly eased into life at the club.

“He’s not match-fit,” Gerrard said of Coutinho.

“Over at Barcelona, he’s been doing a lot of individual training, he’s been doing training in small groups and also, he had a Covid situation as well.

“He’s trained fully for the last couple of days, there’s still a fantastic player there for sure. I’m sure we’ll see a lot left in this boy because, for me, he’s a fantastic talent, we’re lucky to have him and at the right time, he’ll be unleashed.”

Hello and welcome to Standard Sport’s LIVE coverage of Aston Villa vs Man United this evening.

The sides met on Monday in the FA Cup, with United edging through to the fourth round with a nervy 1-0 victory but Steven Gerrard’s side would have taken plenty of positives from that after an impressive display from the visitors.

Buoyed by the signings of Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho, and with United still yet to hit anything close to top gear under Ralf Rangnick, Villa will go into the match confident of causing their opponents real problems.

We’ll have all the latest updates and team news ahead of kick-off, which comes at 5:30pm GMT at Villa Park.
