Australians moving away from beer and towards wine

New research has found regular, light drinking associated with heart health

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that average alcohol consumption has been falling every year since 2007 and is now at its lowest levels since the 1960s.

As well as falling volumes -- in 2013-2014 there were just 9.7 liters of pure alcohol available for consumption for every Australian aged 15 or over, compared with 13.09 liters in 1974-1975 -- tastes are also changing.

Australia may have forged a stellar reputation for wine, but back in the 1960s, beer accounted for roughly 75% of all alcohol consumption while wine came in at 12%.

The latest figures show that wine now accounts for 38% and beer has fallen to just under 41%.
