AVA debunks claims of 'plastic' keropok being sold at Hari Raya Bazaar
The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has spoken out to debunk a viral video in which a man claims that plastic keropok was being sold at this year’s Hari Raya Bazaar.
In a statement posted online on Thursday night (24 May), AVA referred to a video circulating online of a man setting fire to a piece of keropok lekor at the bazaar, telling the stallholder that the food was made of plastic.
In response, AVA said: “Before you jump to any conclusions, we would like to clarify that we have not received any feedback on the cracker, and have not detected any fake food (i.e. food made with synthetic materials) in Singapore thus far.”
AVA further explained that food products containing fats, carbohydrates, and protein can burn in this manner and become charred.
The video has been shared on Facebook over 5,000 times.
“So before you believe or spread such fake news, do exercise good judgement on whether your information sources are credible,” said AVA.
