'The Avengers' director sets sights on fresh personal project

US director Joss Whedon

Writer-director Joss Whedon ("The Avengers") has revealed he has a new project in the pipeline, which centers on a female protagonist.

The original screenplay is set to center on the story of "a girl who goes through some unbelievable sh-t", according to an interview he recently took part in with The Wrap.

While Whedon refused to dish set details, he added that he expects to finish the script in the next couple months and that this new, more personal film marks a new era in his career.

"It's the first time in my life I'm writing without a sort of studio audience rating -- without a plan," he said. "I'm just writing about something I care about, so it's a little terrifying and it's taking a little longer. But I think it will be good!"
