Baby found abandoned at Penang senior citizen's front door

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A male infant, believed to be about a week old, was found abandoned in front of a woman's house in Mengkuang Semarak, Kubang Semang here, yesterday.

Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police chief, ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the baby, who was wrapped in a batik cloth, was discovered by the 76-year-old female homeowner after she heard the baby crying at 7.45am.

Halijah Ariffin said the infant was left on the floor, under a chair, in front of her house.

"At that time, I was watching television, but clearly heard the sound of a baby crying. I immediately opened the door to investigate – and saw the baby.

“I called my next-door neighbour. At first, I was scared, but I took pity on the crying child and carried him in," she added.

Nik Ros said the baby was sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ) for a health examination and will be brought to the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for further action.

He urged anyone with information on the case to contact the nearest police station. -- Bernama
