Badminton: India to host Thomas, Uber Cup finals in 2014

Badminton's Thomas and Uber Cups world team championships will be held in India for the first time next year, the president of the Badminton Association of India announced Friday. The Thomas Cup for men and the women's Uber Cup will take place in New Delhi from May 18-25, Akhilesh Das Gupta said. "We are thankful to the BWF (Badminton World Federation) for giving us the opportunity to host the prestigious Thomas Cup and Uber Cup in the country for the first time," Gupta told reporters in New Delhi. "I'm confident India will organise a world class tournament." India hosted the world badminton championships in Hyderabad in 2009. "We have seen the rising standard of the tournaments held in India over the years and are confident about their capabilities," BWF secretary-general Thomas Lund said. China are the reigning champions in both the Thomas and Uber Cups, having won at home in Wuhan in 2012.
