As is the same in every industry, awards shows are facing questions over their environmental footprint, with many of them making huge strides towards being more sustainable, such as the Golden Globes opting to serve a completely plant-based menu. And now, the Baftas have announced their new approach, in which they have asked all attendees to consider rewearing an outfit they already own or to choose another sustainable option.

"Sustainability is very important to Bafta, and we’re doing more than ever before," a spokesperson told us. "The goal is that the EE British Academy Film Awards 2020 will be carbon neutral, working towards having a net positive impact on the environment. From travel and food, to branding and materials, Bafta is ensuring the awards are as sustainable as possible."

Part of this will involve equipping guests with the tools they need to be more sustainable with their fashion choices. All attendees will be or have been provided with a sustainable fashion guide created by the London College of Fashion’s Centre for Sustainability, detailing how to dress more mindfully for award ceremonies. However, they emphasised that this isn't mandatory.

“Bafta are giving people the tools to do more (e.g offset travel, sustainable fashion guide) should they want to," the spokesperson added. "The LCF sustainable fashion guide is provided as one small part of our wider sustainability efforts where we are looking at every part of our awards to do more than ever before”.

The guide suggests options for guests to consider regarding renting clothes or buying vintage, as well as offering examples of designers who have sustainable credentials, including Stella McCartney, Phoebe English, Reformation and Rejina Pyo. And of course, encouraging guests to wear something they have already worn before.

A number of stars have already made a sustainability statement by wearing a dress on the red carpet that they have worn previously, including Cate Blanchett at the Cannes Film Festival and at our Women of the Year Awards. The trend for wearing vintage though, has been even more prevalent. Kim Kardashian West, Rihanna, Bella Hadid and Jennifer Aniston have all been looking at past collections for their biggest red-carpet moments recently, so we can certainly expect this to be a prevalent trend at this year's Baftas.
