BANGI: MCA’s Balakong by-election candidate Tan Chee Teong lodged a police report today over the alleged vandalism of 100 party buntings last week.
The report was made at the Kajang police headquarters at 3.52pm – about four hours after DAP issued a 24-hour ultimatum for MCA to apologise for purportedly linking the Pakatan Harapan (PH) component party to the incident.
According to a copy of the report, 100 MCA buntings at Kampung Kwan Tung Baru, Sungai Chua here, were found to have been taken down and thrown all over the road on Aug 23.
When met outside the police headquarters this afternoon, Tan said that circumstances had compelled him to make the report so that the authorities could get to the bottom of the matter.
“Previously, I mentioned that I would only initially lodge a report (on the incident) with the Election Commission (EC) and not with the police.
“However it came to the point that I needed to lodge the police report.
“Let the police investigate the matter, as they are able to do so in a professional manner unlike political parties,” he said without mentioning any specific political party.
Tan said that his move was motivated by complaints he received from the Sungai Chua MCA operations room over the incident.
He, however, declined to say whether DAP’s ultimatum factored in to his decision to lodge the police report, or whether MCA will issue an apology over the matter.
Nevertheless, Tan stressed that he never accused DAP of being behind the vandalism during his press conference on the issue on Aug 25.
“I never made any reference to DAP or specify anyone when I held the press conference,” he said.
Earlier today, Selangor DAP secretary Ean Yong Hian Wah said that they will take legal action if MCA fails to issue an apology over Tan’s statement within 24 hours.
The Balakong state constituency seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent, Eddie Ng Tien Chee, in a road accident on July 20.
