Bali Emerging Writers Festival all set to inspire younger generation

The Bali Emerging Writers Festival (BEWF) is set to gather a number of young talents from around the world for its fifth installment on April 24-26.

Organized by Yayasan Mudra Swari Sarawwati, which also organizes the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF), BEWF will be held at the Danes Art Veranda in Denpasar and aims to encourage young Indonesian writers.

“This festival is about bringing creative people together to spread creative energy in Indonesia,” said UWRF director and BEWF founder Janet DeNeefe at a press conference in Denpasar.

Several renowned young writers set to contribute to the festival include travel writer Windy Ariestanty, novelist Eka Kurniawan and Bali poet Ni Wayan Idayati.

The festival is more than just a literary festival for young and emerging writers. Those involved with creative literature will also be taking part in the event, including young cinematographer Lucky Kuswandi, whose latest work, Selamat Pagi Malam, was screened at prestigious movie festivals in Singapore, Tokyo, London and Los Angeles; singer and songwriter Budi Doremi; and blogger Valiant Budi. They will share their inspiring experience in creating their creative works through writing.

Besides them, two writers from Australia, Lou Heinrich and Omar Sakr, will also appear as part of the collaboration between BEWF and the Emerging Writers Festival in Melbourne, Australia.

“Younger generations that are not interested in literature would feel different if they knew that literature can be incorporated with music, movies and other things,” said Ni Wayan Idayati.
