SINGAPORE —Popular eatery The Banana Leaf Apolo was charged in court on Wednesday (17 February) for breaching COVID-19 regulations.

The operator was handed five charges pertaining to alleged offences committed at its outlet at 48 Serangoon Road in Little India Arcade on 12 September last year.

These are for failing to ensure that any gathering of individuals in its premises did not exceed the maximum permissible group size, failing to ensure a one-metre safe distance between seated customers, providing a self-service buffet of food for consumption, and allowing customers to make speeches and play a video recording in its premises.

The alleged offences occurred between 7.45pm and 10pm.

A representative indicated in court that the operator will not be engaging a lawyer and will be pleading guilty. The plea mention has been fixed for 1 April.

The Banana Leaf Apolo has opened four outlets since it began operating in 1974.

The Singapore Tourism Board said in a press release that it filed a Magistrate's Complaint on 20 January against the eatery for multiple breaches under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020 at its Little India Arcade restaurant.

If convicted of each charge, the eatery can be fined up to $10,000.
