Bandung's Jl. Asia Afrika to host Car Free Night in late May

Legendary street: During the CFN, Jl. Asia Afrika Bandung will be closed to vehicles, starting from the junction of the Panghegar Hotel to Alun-Alun (Bandung's Central Park).

This week, Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil announced that starting on the third Saturday of May, Jl. Asia Afrika will host its first-ever Car Free Night (CFN).

During the CFN, Jl. Asia Afrika Bandung will be closed to vehicles, starting from the junction of the Panghegar Hotel to Alun-Alun (Bandung's Central Park).

The CFN on Jl. Asia Afrika will be held for longer than usual CFN events, lasting from 7.30 p.m. on Saturday to 10 a.m. the following Sunday. The reason for this, according the mayor, is so that a lot more people can enjoy the CFN whether at night or morning.

Bandung's citizens had shown great enthusiasm when visiting the revamped street of Jl. Asia Afrika, which prior to the Asian African Conference's 60th anniversary, was redesigned in a nostalgic Art Deco style to match several landmarks in the neighborhood, and adorned with interesting street ornaments such as European-styled street lamps and benches. Ornaments and landmarks in spirit with the conference were also built around Jl. Asia Afrika, which now have become visitors' favorite photo spots.

The conference's anniversary last April had brought up many iconic moments from the street, inclusive of when leaders of Asian African nations did the Historical Walk on the street toward Gedung Merdeka. All of the above have resulted in ongoing enthusiasm for the street, which has not yet slowed.

Since late 2013, the city government has launched several CFN events, such as Braga Culinary Night, as a way to engage its citizens in outdoor activities, to go out more, mingle and to enjoy the city and its public spaces.
