Bangladeshi man charged for entering Singapore illegally, trying to leave in car boot
SINGAPORE — A Bangladeshi national who tried to leave Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint by hiding in the boot of a car has been charged in court.
Channu A Hamid Madbor, 29, did not have his passport with him at the time he was caught at about 8.20pm on Monday (5 August). Neither did he enter the country legally.
According to his charge sheets, he had been “lawfully sent out of Singapore” on 22 April 2016.
The driver of the Malaysia- registered car, Rosmawati AB Rahman, 28, and her passenger, Rose Salvina Muhamad, 33, were also charged along with Channu on Wednesday (7 August) with abetting him to leave Singapore illegally.
Both women are Malaysians.
The cases for all three suspects will be mentioned again next week.
The penalty for entering Singapore illegally is up to six months’ jail, along with at least three strokes of the cane.
Offenders who cannot be caned, such as women and those above 50, face an additional fine of up to $6,000 in lieu of caning.
Rosmawati and Rose Salvina both face jail terms of between six months and two years, along with a fine of up to $6,000, if they are found guilty.
In a statement on Tuesday (6 August), the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said it takes a serious view of attempts to enter or depart Singapore illegally.
Vehicles used in such offences are also liable to be forfeited, it added.
