Bangladeshi man stole from sex worker and threatened her to provide service in Geylang hotel
SINGAPORE — A 28-year-old Bangladeshi man was jailed 13 months and given three strokes of the cane on Thursday (29 August) for stealing from a sex worker with help from a compatriot.
Hossain Sakil was sentenced in the State Courts after he pleaded guilty to one count each of theft with common intention, vandalism, theft and consuming methamphetamine. Other charges, including fraudulent possession, were taken into consideration for sentencing.
The sex worker, who was a 36-year-old Uzbekistani, went to Min Wah Hotel in Geylang on 24 January to meet Hossain after he requested for sexual services. While this was happening, Hossain’s accomplice, Molla Mamun, hid outside a window.
When the victim reached the hotel room, Hossain dragged her inside and Molla entered through the window. Hossain pushed the victim onto the bed and ransacked her bag to steal her money.
Hossain asked the woman for sex but the victim refused. After the two men threatened her, the woman had sex with the duo.
After the men left the room, the woman discovered that she lost $700 and her iPhone worth RM500 ($164). She sought help from the hotel receptionist to call the police.
Hossain and Molla were arrested on 25 January at their residence. Only the victim’s mobile phone was found.
Several days earlier, Hossain and Molla had gone on a stealing spree at a pasar malam at Jurong Gateway Singapore.
On 20 January, Hossain and Molla met a third person, Miah Basir, and informed him of their plan to steal things from the night market. Miah was initially reluctant but later joined the two in their offences.
At the time, the stalls were covered in canvas sheets, and Miah stood outside one of the stalls as a lookout while Hossain and Molla helped themselves to the loot.
They stole 16 electronic devices, including a Samsung J3 mobile phone, an HP Pavilion laptop, and a Sharp Camcorder. All the devices were recovered when Hossain and Molla were arrested on 25 January.
Hossain’s urine was later found to contain methamphetamine.
Molla was sentenced to 10 months' jail on 22 August for drug and theft offences.
Apart from these offences Hossain also admitted to helping a loanshark in exchange for $200 in cash on 21 January, and for stealing a mobile phone from a person who was sleeping by the side of the road on 31 December last year.
