A Bangladeshi construction supervisor is currently on trial for allegedly raping a 44-year-old woman from China twice at a rented room in Geylang.

Hossain Anowar, 32, is said to have committed the offences between 11am and 1.10pm on 29 February 2016 in the room located at 72A Geylang Lorong 8.

In their opening address, the prosecution said that the victim, whose identity cannot be revealed due to a gag order, was in Singapore to visit her husband who works in the construction industry. The victim’s husband had rented the room in Geylang for the couple to reside in for the duration of the victim’s stay in Singapore.

The prosecution added that they would be calling 23 witness to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Hossain committed the offences. The victim took to the stand at the High Court on Tuesday (4 July), behind closed doors.

According to the prosecution’s opening address, the victim was alone in the room in the early afternoon of 29 February as her husband was at work. Hossain, who was a tenant in the building, knocked at the victim’s door in the early afternoon.

When the woman opened the door, she saw Hossain gesturing at her with a toothbrush. The victim assumed that Hossain wanted to borrow some toothpaste from her and proceeded to the common toilet to take the toothpaste.

Raped twice

While the victim was in the toilet, Hossain allegedly entered the toilet and locked the door behind them. He then proceeded to unzip her shorts and raped her.

The woman then opened the door and tried to leave the premises but Hossain pulled her into her room and raped her again.

After committing the second alleged rape, Hossain left the building. The woman than called her husband to inform him that she had been sexually assaulted. Her husband returned from work immediately and reported the matter to his landlord, who called the police.

The woman was conveyed to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, while Hossain was subsequently arrested by the police when he returned to the premises.

If found guilty, Hossain is faces imprisonment term of up to 20 years, a fine or caning per charge.
