The Battlestar Galactica cast have been rallying around to help raise money for their co-star Michael Hogan after he suffered a "life-changing" brain injury earlier this year.

A GoFundMe page was set up for the star to help cover the costs of treatment and therapy after he suffered a "massive brain bleed" at a Battlestar Galactica convention.

His wife Susan explained what happened that day and how things are for him now.

"On Feb. 17, 2020, everything changed drastically in our world. Michael was in Vancouver participating in a Battlestar Galactica convention, and at dinner following his day's work, he fell and hit his head. Hard.

"He went to bed that night not realizing that the impact had caused a massive brain bleed. He was unable to be woken the next morning and was taken to Vancouver General Hospital and emergency surgery performed.

"It took 57 staples to close the part of his scull they had to remove in order to reach the damage."

The actor played Colonel Saul Tigh in the 2004 sci-fi series and several of his castmates have been sharing the fundraising page – which at the time of writing has raised $281,700.

Battlestar Galactica showrunner, Ronald Moore, tweeted: "Michael Hogan – Col Tigh from BSG and our dear friend – is fighting to recover from a terrible head injury. Please help his family in this time of need by contributing whatever you can."

Co-star Tricia Helfer, who player Number Six in the franchise, wrote: "Our amazing XO has been fighting for months now. Michael Hogan is one of the dearest, funniest, most talented men I know, and is going through an incredibly challenging time. Here's where we all can help him and his family #BSG."
