BBC Breakfast presenter Matt Taylor accidentally insults Rick Astley in front of the singer

From Digital Spy

BBC Breakfast weather presenter Matt Taylor suffered one of those horrendously awkward work moments today as he put his foot in it with singer Rick Astley.

As Matt brought his weather update to a close on the morning show today (September 22) presenter Charlie Stayt asked him whether he was a fan of Rick in a link to their interview with the star, which was coming up next.

"Er, not a massive [fan]," a slightly confused looking Matt said, to which Charlie replied: "Well, that was the wrong thing to say. He's listening!"

The look of horror on Matt's face was priceless as he quickly apologised and Charlie gave him a chance to redeem himself by asking again if he was a Rick Astley fan.

Getting the hint this time, Matt answered: "Love Rick Astley. Best. Grew up with him."

But Charlie then continued to joke that the "damage is done", adding: "He heard everything you said, Matt."

Thankfully, Rick seemed to find the situation hilarious and was seen laughing on his video link after Matt's reply, later declaring: "That's brilliant."

"That went well, didn't it?" Charlie then added.

Hopefully now that Matt's put his foot in it once he'll always be careful to say that he's a fan of anyone mentioned on the show... And, just in case he needs a reminder, he's even changed his Twitter profile picture to the moment he realised the slip-up.

"'Not a massive fan' of my #NewProfilePic," he wrote. "Sums up my morning though..."

Rick has taken it all in good spirits though, and later assured the BBC Breakfast team and Matt himself that "all is forgiven".

"You sir are a true gent! Thank you," Matt then replied.

'Never Gonna Give You Up' singer Rick was on the show to promote a single he is releasing to raise money for BBC Children in Need and to raise awareness for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Award.

'Every One Of Us' features a range of famous faces in the video, including Alex Scott and Ellie Simmonds, and is available now.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
