Are the Gen Zs better at self-care than Millenials and Gen X? According to TwoHerbs Herbal Hair Treatment Salon, which incorporates 100 per cent Chinese and Ayurvedic ingredients in their herbal hair treatment, the bulk of their customers are Gen Zs of both genders. Males and females, I discovered, are starting their haircare routine early to ensure a full head of hair in their later years, way before they start noticing any hair loss symptoms.

Yahoo Shopping & our TikTok team were recently invited to a herbal haircare treatment by TwoHerbs Herbal Hair Treatment Salon. We chatted with owner Trichologist Riff Lim, a haircare specialist with 18 years of experience, to find out what we were missing out on in our haircare routine. The founder also shares what makes TwoHerbs unique, hair loss symptoms, what to look out for in your hair products and tips for daily maintenance.

Yahoo Shopping: What are the early signs of hair loss, and how do we spot them?

Riff Lim: Early signs of hair loss can be spotted by the amount of hair on your floor trap. A rule of thumb is that hair loss should be less than the size of a fifty-cent coin; any size more significant than that is a sure indication of hair loss, and one should seek help immediately. Another sign may be losing more than the usual amount of hair when you are brushing your hair.

Which groups are most susceptible to hair loss? Are hair loss issues due to genetics, dietary or lifestyle factors?

Genetics is the number one cause of hair loss as this group of people tend to drop hair earlier than their peers. In addition, stress can be a major factor in hair loss, which is increasingly common in schooling teenagers nowadays. Another factor is the lack of sleep which is common among adults who work night shifts and abide by irregular hours.

How young should one start hair loss prevention?

Teenagers as young as those in secondary school can start doing hair treatments to prevent hair loss. It is unfortunate that it is becoming increasingly prevalent for teenagers to experience hair loss due to exam stress.

Could you share some tips on maintaining a healthy scalp and ways to limit hair loss?

Tip 1: Detox monthly to cleanse the scalp and prevent sebum build-up.

Tip 2: Blow-dry your hair only until it is semi-dry. Avoid drying your hair thoroughly as it damages the hair cuticles.

Tip 3: Use cold air to blow-dry your hair instead of hot air. Hot air tends to open up the follicles, which leads to the follicles trapping more dirt.

Tip 4: Use a hair tonic daily to give your hair vitamins. Your scalp is part of your skin and requires vitamins like your face and body.

What makes TwoHerbs’ hair loss treatment unique?

TwoHerbs offers the best of both worlds with its unique blend of hair loss treatments that uses Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs to provide nutrients to your scalp. The cold cap used during the hair loss treatment is a similar method used during chemotherapy to aid hair growth for cancer patients, which has been proven to stimulate hair growth.

The ingredients in your unique formula are primarily herbs. Could you share some of its main ingredients to help prevent hair loss?

  • Bringraj — Bhringraj means "King of Hair." The herb won its reputation after decades of helping hair growth and preventing hair loss.

  • Amla — Strengthen hair roots.

  • Korean red ginseng — Boosts blood circulation.

  • Brahmi — Contains antioxidant nutrients which aid healthy hair roots and encourage hair growth.

  • Old Ginger — Has the natural ability to stimulate blood flow.

  • Dang Gui — Contains phytoestrogens that reverse genetic hair loss.

What should we take note of when purchasing hair loss products?

Tip 1: Avoid products that contain sulphates, parabens and silicones that will clog the hair follicles, which in turn, causes more hair loss.

Tip 2: Look for anti-hair loss shampoos that contain natural herbal extracts that are good for the scalp.

Tip 3: Look for a hair tonic that contains alcohol. The alcohol content will help dissolve oil sebum and provide a layer of protection against dirt and dust for the scalp.

Are there any foods we should eat more of or avoid to maintain lustrous hair and prevent further hair loss?

Eating food high in protein, like tofu, meat, and eggs, has been proven to help hair growth and prevent hair loss. Avoid deep-fried or spicy foods as these tend to aggravate the scalp into producing more sweat causing the scalp to get clogged faster.

Have you observed any trends at your salon?

Our customer base range from those in their early 20s to their early 50s. Based on my observation, there is a trend of those in their early 20s taking better care of their hair even when they are not facing hair loss. They will come once a month to cleanse and detox the scalp, which helps prevent hair loss in the later part of their life.
