Two female ostriches came to blows as they battled for superiority in the herd in Botswana, with their chicks watching on.

The fathers also clashed at a later point as the birds attempted to establish a pecking order.

The clash was captured by Jannes Drotsky, an amateur wildlife photographer, in the Nxai Pan National park.

Mr Drotsky, a farmer from Bethal Mpumalanga, South Africa, said: "It is an extremely rare sighting of this behaviour where chicks are involved. I have never seen a picture of it before.

"The chicks are close to a day old, probably their first time at the water. It is very harsh conditions that time of year with very limited water available. They really struggle before the annual rains set in summer."

Mr Drotsky goes on wildlife holidays to Botswana with his family at least twice a year.
