Becky James beats Pendleton's cycling sprint record

Britain's Rebecca James has broken compatriot Victoria Pendleton's Olympic women's sprint record

Briton Becky James's return from a health scare gathered steam as she broke compatriot Victoria Pendleton's Olympic women's sprint record in Rio on Sunday. Fresh from claiming silver in Saturday's keirin at the Olympic velodrome, James topped the times in women's sprint qualifying on Sunday. The 24-year-old posted a mark of 10.721sec, just three thousandths of a second faster than double Olympic champion Pendleton clocked in London four yeas ago. Pendleton went on to lose the Olympic final in London to Australian track legend Anna Meares but she made up for it by winning the keirin. She also won sprint gold in Beijing four years earlier. James, who was world champion in both the sprint and keirin in 2013 before suffering health problems, took silver behind Elis Ligtlee of the Netherlands in Saturday's keirin. Two years ago she was operated on after cancerous cells were found in her body during a smear test.
