This week, the world’s most iconic perfume turns 100. Chanel No5, the first fragrance launched by a female couturier, has spanned decades as the signature scent of women across the globe, adored for its unmistakeable bouquet of rose, jasmine and vanilla.

To mark this astonishing milestone, Chanel is this week releasing its new campaign film, starring new face Marion Cotillard. The film, shot by renowned Swedish director Johan Renck, sees Cotillard dance through an otherworldly journey in a spun-gold dress – Virginie Viard's ode to one of Gabrielle's original gowns.

“The film portrays the connection between two human forces who come together for one dance, the length of a dream, in a very powerful moment,” says the brand.

“I remember when I first smelled Chanel No5 – my mum bought it as a present for a British friend, she wanted to give her the ultimate French present,” Cotillard tells Bazaar. “It was the first time I smelled it – I was a teenager, around 15. I loved it straight away. It’s mysterious. I wouldn’t have put my feelings into words back then, but I remember I thought it was really unique, I had never smelled a fragrance like it before.”

According to Cotillard, the team wanted to create something “simple and radical” for the 100th anniversary campaign. “This woman would be free and joyful and that’s a part of who I am,” she told us. “I didn’t want to create a character that would be very far from myself – unlike when I choose a character in films, when I always want to explore a different kind of person, someone who is very far from me. It’s a different vision.”
