Bella Hadid has called for an end to racism in fashion, highlighting examples of how racial discrimination manifests itself in the industry.

The 2020 Black Lives Matter movement has prompted an awakening about the extent of existing global racism. The fashion world is part of the problem, with a lack of Black representation on catwalks and adverts, as well as in magazines, both in the pages and behind the scenes. Infrastructures are also needed to ensure that Black-owned businesses are able to thrive.

Hadid said that racism was something her Black model friends experienced regularly.

"Going into the next season, my fear is having to see another one of my Black girlfriends get her hair burned by a hair straightener, or do her own make-up because the make-up artist hasn’t been trained to work with all different skin types," Hadid told Elle.

"I hate that some of my Black friends feel the way they do. Even if they’re sitting front row, they’re not feeling accepted," she added. "Our industry is supposed to be about expression and individuality, but the reality is that [many people] still discriminate because of exactly [those differences]."

The model, who has been self-isolating on her family ranch in Pennsylvania, feels it's her duty to use her platform for good. “I want young girls and boys to know that it is okay to use your voice and demand justice for what is important to you," she said. "I want them to know it’s okay to be empathetic and gentle, but to be strong and speak your truth at the same time.”

Following the murder of George Floyd, Hadid shared an impassioned Instagram post demanding justice. She said there was no reason for anyone to be treated so inhumanely.

"This has got to stop. It’s hard to watch a video so foul," she wrote. "It’s hard to think that this is still happening. but it is reality. And these police officer need to be accountable to the maximum degree for their obviously disgusting and horrific actions. I feel so sick, sad and sorry for George Floyd and his family."
