Bella Thorne Blasted for ‘Very Insensitive’ Tweet After Deadly Mudslides

Bella Thorne’s name is mud as far as numerous Twitter users are concerned, after she posted a tweet that was deemed “very insensitive” following the deadly mudslides that plagued southern California this week.

“Famous in Love” actress Thorne initially tweeted her annoyance over the closure of the 101 freeway on Wednesday, writing in a since-deleted tweet, “F— u 101 to Santa Barbra [sic]. I’m missing my boyfriends [sic] first date on his tour:(((“

Thorne was apparently unaware at the time that the 101 was closed due to mudslides that have left at least 17 people dead and caused a large part of the freeway between Ventura and Santa Barbara to be covered in mud.

Among those quick to call her out was Rob Lowe, who posted a screen shot of Thorne’s tweet on Instagram with the caption: “This attitude is why people hate celebrities/Hollywood. Bella, I’m sorry you were inconvenienced. We will try to move out our dead quicker.”

The actress later tweeted, “F— just caught up on some news had no idea why the 101 was shut down…get home to your family safe.” However, that clarification failed to sway the critics who descended on Thorne in the comments section.

“Should’ve apologized under the tweet, not delete it,” read one response.

“She clearly deleted it because she figured out what was going on and realized it was insensitive,” read one defense of Thorne. However, others were not as forgiving.

“Her agent probably called her! This is not an apology,” wrote one detractor, who added, “People died! 100’s homes destroyed! And her tweet was very insensitive towards them!”

“Does she now think the traffic is because of people driving on the 101 to ‘get home to their families?'” another response asked. “The 101 is a lake right now.”

“Where have you BEEN? There’s no avoiding this news,” another response read.

“Yeah we’ll hurry and move all the dead bodies, boulders and pieces of homes off HWY 101 for you so that YOU can make it to a concert, the folks that are still missing or stuck in their homes are no. 2 to your needs,” wrote another Thorne critic, who added the hashtag, “#growup.”

Wrote another critic, “you didn’t even apologize. you’re so arrogant, selfish, and constantly looking for an excuse to get you out of trouble! Be selfless for once, my mom can’t even get home from a week of work and many people lost loved ones. have a heart.”

On Tuesday, Oprah Winfrey posted videos of the damage that the mudslides brought to her neighborhood. One video showed a fire that erupted from the broken gas line; another showed a helicopter flying overhead looking for survivors; another showed the damage on Oprah’s property, with mud at least ankle deep in her backyard.
