Beluga Whales Relocated to Open Water Sanctuary in Iceland

Two former captive beluga whales were relocated to a new sea sanctuary in Klettsvik Bay in Iceland on August 7.

SEA LIFE Trust confirmed the two whales, Little Grey and Little White, were acclimatising in a bayside care pool before their final release into the wider sanctuary in Klettsvik Bay in the Westman Islands off the south coast of Iceland.

In June 2019 the whales were transported by air, land and sea from Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai to the whale sanctuary in Iceland.

“Following extensive planning and rehearsals, the first stage of their release back to the ocean was as smooth as we had hoped and planned for. We are carefully monitoring Little Grey and Little White with our expert care team and veterinarians and hope to announce their final release very soon” Andy Bool, Head of SEA LIFE Trust, said.
