Is this the best buy in Singapore’s car market?

image

SINGAPORE It’s longer than an Audi A8 3.0 TFSI and its engine produces more torque. It even has a quattro system of sorts. It offers more size and power than any car in its price range. The catch? It’s a Nissan pick-up truck.

This new NP300 Navara is a five-seater, double-cab pick-up that is on sale here for $132,800 with COE. That’s for the six-speed manual version.

If you want one with only two pedals, you’ll have to pay $136,800. And get this: the Navara has a seven-speed auto, making it the only pick-up in town with one.

The Navara is actually loaded with kit that car owners covet. It has leather upholstery and rear air-con vents, Bluetooth phone pairing, steering-mounted buttons for the sound system, cruise control and so on.

But just as interesting is the twin-turbo, 2.3-litre engine under the bonnet. It churns out 190 horsepower, with a peak torque figure of 450Nm at just 1,500rpm.

We can’t think of a rival car that offers this much power at this price.

If you’ve never thought of a double-cab pick-up as a substitute for a car, the Nissan should be an eye-opener. Could the Navara be a cut-price way to have a practical machine that’s also a bit of a hotrod?
