I wore this $108 H&M jacket every day on vacation — here's how I styled it

I just came back from NYC and I swear (almost) everyone was wearing this one jacket style.

I wore this $108 H&M aviator jacket every day on vacation — here's why it's great for fall (photos via author).

I recently went on a trip to New York City and while I encountered some of the city's most iconic sights — street rats and celebrity children in the wild — there was one thing that stood out: so many people were wearing aviator jackets.

Aviator jackets are, in my opinion, one of those cold-weather staples that are next to impossible to mess up. Whether you wear one with jeans or dress it up with a skirt, the pilot-inspired style is a celebrity and fashion girl staple for fall.

In New York, the aviator jackets I saw ran the gamut. Some, as inferred by their wearer's designer bags and logo-printed sneakers, fell under the four-digit territory. While others more closely resembled the aviator jacket I packed in my own suitcase: H&M's Aviator Jacket (shop here in Canada, here in the U.S.).

The temperatures were in the low-to-mid-teens for most of my time in the city (a Heaven-sent miracle), so H&M's faux leather jacket was more than warm enough. On chillier mornings, I layered the jacket with Sezane's alpaca Emile Cardigan and wore a thermal long-sleeve from Uniqlo under almost everything.

The jacket, which comes in four colourways and sizes XXS to 4XL, has very quickly become one of my most-worn pieces this fall. Its collar, cuffs and hem feature a soft teddy fleece, and its zippered pockets are deep enough to fit a small umbrella (random but very helpful).

Here I am in the airport bathroom — talk about glamour! I'm wearing the jacket with an old pair of pants from Zara (which I endearingly call my "fun pants"), a sweatshirt from The Kooples and (very dirty) Thousand Fell sneakers.

I wish I could say I took more professional photos on this trip than bathroom mirror selfies, but that would be a lie. On this chilly morning, I paired the H&M aviator with this gorgeous cashmere hoodie from Lilysilk and Aurate hoops.

Later in the day, I headed over to check out H&M's limited-edition Rabanne X H&M collection. In another life, I would be all over these purple sequined pants, but in this life, they stayed in the dressing room.

On day three of my trip to the Big Apple, I styled the faux leather aviator jacket with a pin-stripe shirt from Zara, an old pair of Zara jeans and this cozy alpaca and wool Emile Cardigan from Sezane.

Kayla Kuefler, you are an outfit repeater! (IYKYK). On my fourth and final day in Manhattan, I re-wore my "fun pants" for the plane, Sezane's Emile Cardigan and underneath it all, wore this HEATTECH crew neck from Uniqlo — a staple in my cold weather wardrobe.
