It’s taken me a long time to admit that I’m a creature of habit. Despite years of trying to convince myself that I could be one of those care-free, spontaneous, free-spirited type of people, I fully embrace that I am highly predictable. I thrive on routine, from everything to getting ready in the morning, the route I take to work and the meals I eat.

My predictability overflows into the brands and products that I love, which in this line of work may be considered a detriment. As a lifestyle editor, I receive tons of new products to try, and while there are some that make the cut, nine times out of 10 I end up sticking with my tried and true favourites that have never let me down. Case in point: my favourite hand cream for more than a decade, Aveda Hand Relief.

Around this time of year, my hands begin to dry up. With frequent hand washing my hands can quickly go from silky smooth to rough and cracked knuckles if I don’t take care of my skin and moisturize. While there are tons of creams on the market from all price points, the only lotion that transforms my skin without leaving an oily residue is Hand Relief.

I was first introduced to Aveda products when I was working my way through university at my aunt’s hair salon. It was the first time I was introduced to a brand that focused on creating plant-based and sustainable products that were ethically sourced and cruelty-free. Of all the Aveda haircare and beauty products that I’ve used throughout the years, my favourite by far is their best-selling moisturizer, Hand Relief.

Made from 95 per cent naturally derived products, Hand Relief contains sunflower and meadowfoam seed oil to revive dry skin and help prevent hands from losing their softness. What I particularly love about Hand Relief is that unlike other moisturizers, it doesn’t have a synthetic fragrance that can be noticeable whenever you apply. In an office setting, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been able to smell the flowery perfumes of other lotions that can feel gimmicky and most of all, only last for ten minutes before you need to reapply.

Paraben and animal ingredient free, Hand Relief has a solid 4.9 out of 5 star rating from over 2,403 customer reviews on the Aveda website. Made from recycled packaging and produced with 100% wind power as well as energy credits and carbon offsets to balance their electrical and gas usage, Aveda is a brand that champions environmental sustainability while providing high quality products.

While I personally approve of this product and can attest to its benefits, other satisfied Aveda customers can agree that this is the only lotion that can weather colder temperatures.

“This is the only hand cream I'll use,” one Aveda customer wrote. “It is the only one that keeps my hands from cracking during the long, cold, dry Minnesota winters. Bonus that it smells amazing!”

Another added, “My hands are constantly in water from either cooking, cleaning or gardening. They get so dry and cracked, especially in the winter. I have tried tons of hand creams and this one is by far the best one on the market. It isn't greasy, it moisturizes and stays with you.”

For the month of October, Aveda also has a limited edition Hand Relief in a cherry almond scent. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to help fund cruelty-free breast cancer research.
