BESUT: Besut police have arrested a total of 65 drug traffickers in the past three months as of yesterday. The number has increased compared to 31 traffickers caught in the same period last year.

Besut police chief Supt Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi said the increase was the result of numerous strategies which were prepared by the Narcotics division of the Besut police station to combat drug problems in the district.

He added that by reducing drug-related offences, this would help curb other forms of criminal activities.

According to Zamri, all of the suspected drug traffickers were being investigated under Section 39A (1) and Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence.

Yesterday, two men suspected to be drug pushers, were caught with 15.7g of drugs worth RM1,350.

The suspects, aged 48 and 38, from Kampung Seberang Kastam and Kampung Alor Keladi, were high on drugs and had tried to escape the raiding team but failed as the house was surrounded.

A week before, a 23-year-old university graduate was detained after he was believed to be distributing drugs at a roadside near Kampung Gong Kepas. In the 7.45pm raid, 1008 Eramine-5 pills worth RM15,120 were seized.
