Bijoy Dibosh observed in Tripura

Agartala, Dec. 16 (ANI): Tripura State Rifles troopers and the Indian Army paid tribute to martyrs of 1971 India-Pakistan war on the occation of 'Bijoy Dibosh' (Victory Day) in Agartala. Governor Tathagata Roy, Jail Minister Manindra Reang and top official paid tribute at the martyrs' column at the Post Office Chowmhuni here. "Forces which come and liberate, they stay on but this is the first time in the history that the forces liberated and gone back, this is unforgettable and the Bangladeshi people very gratefully acknowledge this. This is from the lips of the Prime Minister (Sheikh Hassina) herself, I bow to her, I refer to her for her acknowledgements and I am proud today to be here for to commemorate this occation," said Governor Roy after laying the wreath on the martyr's column. He also thanked the people of Bangladesh for acknowledging the fact that without the help of India it would have been next to impossible to defeat the brutal Pakistani army. "The Bangladesh people acknowledge with gratitude the huge role played by the Indian army and other forces in the liberation of Bangladesh. Without the help of the Indian army the bestial Pakistani army who had done terrible torture and persecution to the people of Bangladesh they could not have been defeated," Roy added. Commemorated on December 16 every year, 'Bijoy Dibosh' marks India's decisive military victory over arch-rival Pakistan achieved in 1971 ending the 9 month-long Bangladesh Liberation War. The 1971 war, the third engagement between the two neighbours, led to the creation of Bangladesh as a nation. Other then security force personnel, retired army, navy and air force officers, Bangladesh Liberation freedom fighters and civil administration official were also present to pay tribute the war heroes. Similar arrangement was also made at the Lichubagan 1971 war memorial where army personnels paid tribute. It was also on this day that the largest military surrender after World War II took place, when the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Command, Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Arora accepted the instrument of surrender from Lt Gen AAK Niazi of the Pakistan Army at Dhaka.
