Bill Turnbull thanked everyone who gives blood as he prepared to get a transfusion amid his cancer battle.

The former BBC Breakfast presenter was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017.

Updating his fans on Twitter, he wrote: “Getting a blood transfusion today.

“Can’t know who gave it, but am hugely grateful to them.”

“To everyone who donates their blood - thank you, thank you, thank you,” added the 65-year-old.

Turnbull went public about the fact he was dealing with cancer in 2018, a few months after his diagnosis, and has been open about what he is going through.

In 2019 he fronted a documentary entitled Bill Turnbull: Staying Alive, which saw him exploring potential treatments.

Last year the father-of-three said he felt "calm" about the prospect of death and that he had developed "quite a healthy relationship" with it.

“I’ve thought a great deal about death since I was diagnosed with cancer because he’s there, you know – the fella with the hood over his head and the scythe,” he told the Mirror.

"He’s waiting, and that’s fine. I’ve developed quite a healthy relationship with death."

Turnbull presented BBC Breakfast for 15 years from 2001, and is partly remembered for his presenting partnership with Susanna Reid.

He currently works as a presenter for the radio station Classic FM.
