Billie Eilish to headline Glastonbury Festival in 2022

Billie Eilish has revealed she is to play the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury next year – making her the festival's youngest ever headline act.

The 19-year-old No Time To Die singer made the announcement on Instagram by sharing a picture of herself smiling in a Glastonbury hooded sweatshirt captioned "2022".

Festival co-organiser Emily Eavis tweeted: "We couldn’t be happier to announce that the wondrous @billieeilish is headlining the Pyramid on the Friday at next year's Glastonbury Festival, becoming the youngest solo headliner in our history. This feels like the perfect way for us to return and I cannot wait!"

Eilish is scheduled to play the festival on Friday 24 June, in her first ever UK music festival headlining appearance.

The youngest performer to headline Glastonbury previously was Mark Hamilton, bass player with Northern Irish band Ash, who was 20 when the Shining Light rockers replaced Steve Winwood as headliner in 1997.

Former Disney star Miley Cyrus, 28, headlined in 2019 aged 26. Lily Allen played the Pyramid Stage in 2009 when she was 24.

The famous festival – founded by farmer Michael Eavis of Worthy Farm – was was due to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2020, but the event was postponed until 2021 and then again until 2022, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Glastonbury Festival usually runs across five days on the weekend closest to the Summer Solstice. Next year it is scheduled to take place from Wednesday 22 June to Sunday 26 June.

The music festival is held at Worthy Farm and traditionally takes a break every five years, known as a "fallow year", to allow the land to recover.

Further acts for Glastonbury 2022 will be announced in due course.

Tickets for the event are already sold out because they have rolled over from those purchased for the cancelled 2020 festival.
