Who will succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond? It’ll be a while before we find out, but the rumour mill is already spiralling out of control. Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Richard Madden are reportedly frontrunners, but No Time To Die songwriter Billie Eilish has someone else in mind.

“Honestly, Michael B. Jordan would kill that shit,” she told Capital Breakfast. “I think he’d kill it.”

And she’s probably right. The Black Panther star has proven his action man credentials and, what’s more, hiring an African-American to play Bond would succeed in pissing off all the worst people on your Facebook feed. He’s worth considering for that alone.

What we do know for sure is that it won’t be a woman. Producer Barbara Broccoli made that clear in October 2018, when she dismissed the possibility of a gender-switch for the franchise. “Bond is male,” the 58-year-old told the Guardian. “He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male.

“And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.”

She stayed true to that ethos with No Time To Die, introducing Captain Marvel actor Lashana Lynch as a new double-O agent. There was some sadly predictable backlash to the rumours that a black women would be inheriting Bond's 007 status, which Lynch called “sad”.

“It makes me feel quite sad for some people because their opinions, they’re not even from a mean place – they’re actually from a sad place,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

She added: “It’s not about me. People are reacting to an idea, which has nothing to do with my life.”

It's far too early to say whether Lynch’s character will carry over into other Bond films, or even if she’ll be granted her own spin-off. It's also far too early to start speculating who the next Bond will be. But guess what? We're speculating.
