MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR)-Laguna has ordered the closure of a hardware store in Los Baños after it was found to have failed to pay taxes for 3 years.

A BIR representative said they already gave notice to the owner but the person did not respond to the notice.

The hardware store has to pay P80-million for taxes incurred from 2014 to first quarter of 2017.

“They are registered as a non-VAT. Pag non-VAT kasi yan (If it’s non-VAT) that is P1,919,500. But we proved to them after the surveillance that really, they have to be registered as a VAT,” BIR Central Laguna Revenue District Officer Rofu Ranario said.

The BIR said the owner of the hardware vowed to pay taxes within the five-day deadline.

Upon settlement, the store will then be allowed to operate.

The BIR reminds establishments to pay proper taxes to avoid facing closure orders.

“The program of the BIR continues especially with this kind of tax payer who until now has yet to comply,” Ranario said.
